The brass nameplate on the top of the lensboard of this
mahogany beauty reads "Eastman Dry Plate & Film Co. Rochester N.Y. &
London". This camera is historically significant because it was the very first camera model marketed by George Eastman, and one of only three models sold by Eastman without the Kodak name. The other two were a larger field camera, similar to this one, and a "detective" camera. These were produced by the Eastman Dry Plate & Film Company - the predecessor to Eastman Kodak. Eastman coined the word Kodak in 1888, and changed the name of the company to Eastman Kodak in 1892. |
