Before color photography became common for
amateurs, colored prints were created by adding color to black-and-white prints, using
transparent paints. The Velox Water Color Outfit was the most commonly used means set for coloring photographs. The set contained 12 colors:
The colors were on contained in "stamps", which were in the rear of the booklet. The coloring pages were saturated in water color dye of the various colors, with one page of each color, and perforated so that each page yielded 28 stamps, each ½" x 1¾". To use, a stamp of the desired color was removed from a page, placed in one of the small wells in the top of the outfit, and a small amount of water added, producing the transparent water color. The water color was then applied to a print or lantern slide with one of the included brushes. |
